Title hopefuls and traditional rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid go head-to-head for three crucial points in what could be a heated skirmish in Catalonia this weekend.

Both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are gearing up for a title push in La Liga this season and both teams will be eager to put a marker down in this season’s race for top spot when they collide in Sunday’s heavyweight bout.

Barca have only lost once in 14 La Liga fixtures this season, though the team’s performances haven’t always convinced and Los Cules have been grinding out wins by single-goal margins in recent weeks.

However, Barcelona were unable to win three of their last six matches in all competitions and they lost their last big test in La Liga on October 28th when they were toppled at home by rivals Real Madrid (1-2).

Atletico Madrid meanwhile, have been steadily building momentum and their excellent 3-1 win at Feyenoord in the Champions League in midweek was their 11th victory in 13 fixtures in all competitions.

Unlike Barcelona, Atletico Madrid managed to beat Real Madrid earlier in the campaign (3-1) and their ability to carve out results from big games makes them an attractive prospect in the betting markets this weekend.

Atletico have outscored Barcelona in the Spanish top flight so far (30 to 27) while Diego Simeone’s dogged troops have also conceded fewer goals than their opponents since August (12 to 14).

Madrid’s results at Camp Nou have been subpar in recent seasons, however, with Barcelona’s famous home undergoing major renovations and Sunday’s fixture being played at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, the visitors might believe they have a chance of bucking the trend.

Atletico Madrid have won a hugely impressive eight of their last nine La Liga assignments and the dangerous Colchoneros can travel to Catalonia with confidence on Sunday.
